The signs are there when we need to recharge. You’re worn out. It’s Saturday morning and you are working at the office. When approaching burnout, these signs can’t be ignored. They will cost you time and quality, which are two things few businesses can afford to lose. The telltale signs that you may need to recharge include:
Short Attention Span
Your mind is racing and all you can think about is all the work that needs to be done. Here’s one of the top indicators that you need to recharge. You may have been chatting away with a colleague when you realize that they have disconnected from the conversation. Are you just plain boring? Most likely not; many times they are experiencing burnout and working while they talk. A short attention span is an indication that you need to regroup quickly.
This is one of the more obvious symptoms of burnout. By the time exhaustion kicks in, you need to take stock of your work situation and recharge. There reaches a time when a ten minute break from your work will not be enough. At some point, you will need to take an afternoon off. After a day’s rest many will say, “I needed that!” If you have ever been in this situation, you will understand the truth in that statement.
You may be forgetting important appointments, regular appointments, assignments, or details of a task. This can’t be ignored, because in the long run this will only hurt your business. Taking time for yourself, even if it means delegating your work to others is critical when forgetfulness sets in. A forgotten appointment with a client is not easily explained away.
You Feel Overwhelmed
It didn’t start overnight. It’s been building up. Your work has been piling up and you haven’t been able to catch up. This isn’t something that should be ignored. When you look around your desk and all you see if work, unfinished work at that, frustration sets in whether you admit it to yourself or not. Feeling overwhelmed only impedes your best efforts and rarely helps them.
The Quality of Your Work Slips
There was a time when you took pride in the quality of your work. Excellence was what you striven for in every task you took. This one sneaks upon you gradually. You may find yourself surprised at how far you’ve slipped by the time you finally notice. At this stage, many begin looking for ways to cut corners. Whether business owners realize it or not, customers will notice when you cut corners. This will cost in the long run but more importantly, it costs the business owner in terms of self-respect. If you pride yourself on quality work, nothing but quality work will do.
When you are experiencing burnout, or even if you suspect that you may be, take steps to recharge. You can recharge by making time for yourself, stepping outside (preferably for more than ten minutes), stretching (more important than you may think), and spending time with family and good friends.
