Use the term virtual assistant and many envision an offshore answering service, a company that provides phone support for small business owners. Perhaps Siri comes to mind, who can quickly find a phone number or website. However, today’s virtual assistant is not just an answering service.
We offer quality administrative support and organizational solutions to business owners, taking their businesses to a more productive level. The same skills that made us good employees make us efficient administrative assistants.
Unquestionably, Siri is a great piece of software. At the same time, it does have its limitations. Give the voice command to Siri to find a phone number or send an email, and you may be pleased with the results. Ask “her” to type a 17 page document, or maintain your website, and you quickly realize Siri’s limitations. The same holds true with an answering service. They have their place, but ask them to perform administrative tasks, and you will likely be disappointed.
A few of Siri’s limitations might be minimal, however there are flaws that can’t be set aside:
Want Siri to fix a mistake she made in your calendar? She’ll counter that she can’t change existing appointments. Asking her to “call me an ambulance” results in her agreeing: “From now on, I will call you ‘An Ambulance.’ OK?” – LA Times
While this might be funny when playing with your iPhone, if you need an ambulance, it’s not so funny.
On the other hand, ask a virtual assistant if they can type a document, create an eBook, or maintain your website, and you see results. These results translate into reduced work and stress on your part. It allows you to care for those aspects of your business that need your personal touch or that you prefer to do.
Much like an onsite employee, the virtual assistant industry offers solutions to all of your business needs. At the same time, the small business owner is spared the costs of overhead, benefits, and payroll taxes. Though an answering service and voice recognition software have their place, they don’t come with office equipment. A virtual assistant’s office includes office equipment that they uses on behalf of business owners who use their services.
Perhaps, you can use Siri to find a virtual assistant, but to use of the words “virtual assistant” to describe Siri is far from correct. Virtual assistants have built a good reputation for themselves, assisting business owners in all of their office needs. They offer services above and beyond what answering services or Siri offer.
