You’re not alone if this is where you find yourself in the course of a business day. “Just let them leave a message on my answering machine,” is pretty much what comes to mind when you’re buried in paperwork. However, how can this affect your business? Will that missed call really matter? Can’t they just leave a message?
How can this affect your business? It’s true that you’re safe not picking up that phone if that missed call is from someone who just has to have you, and you alone, do their work. We have to ask ourselves, though, how often this is the case. Frequently, that phone call is from someone who wants to do business with you after they have spoken with you and not your answering machine.
Will that missed call really matter? Recently, I knew of someone who wanted to talk to a real estate agent about a short sale. The first two calls I made were to Realtors I knew who did not pick up their phone. The third call I made was to another Realtor who I did not know, but I had heard good things about her. She did pick up the phone, and I sent the business her way. When someone is about to lose their home, they are scared and want to talk to someone now. It is imperative that you pick up your phone or call back. That missed call might be your missed opportunity.
Can’t they just leave a message? No scare tactics here … yes, they can leave a message and some will. At the same time, it can’t go unsaid that many will not leave a message. They will simply go back to their search engine and see who else offers the same services you offer.
So, next time you think it might be worth it to let the answering machine pick up that call, think again. That missed call might be a missed opportunity.
